Capturing the Candid

This past week I had the opportunity to go on a photoshoot adventure with @Karissa_Majeski and @hippyjreamer. The young couple was a joy to work with and were naturals in front of the camera! The format of the shoot was very relaxed - allowing the couple to not focus on the camera and instead focus on each other! Capturing candid and intimate moments are not something that a photographer can simply recreate with forced poses - they quickly come and go and it is the photographer's job to capture those blink-of-an-eye moments.

Capturing the Candid is not always as easy as it sounds. Sometimes you have to anticipate the moments before they occur. On the luggage portion of the photoshoot with Karissa and Jerry, at one moment I noticed a car was approaching. This had happened many times and normally we would stop shooting for a moment, move to the shoulder of the road and let the car pass. However this time I decided to keep the shoot going. Why you might ask? Because this time something was different - Karissa and Jerry were not aware the car was approaching! I thought this would be a great opportunity to capture a spontaneous moment that would lead to raw emotion. The car approached and startled Karissa and Jerry, and drove around us. Like anticipated, Karissa and Jerry then looked my way - allowing me to capture a priceless candid moment.

Sometimes capturing the best candid moments are anticipating when they will occur - and in some cases even purposely 'staging' candid moments like in the case with the approaching car.

Anticipating candid moments is a crucial skill - allowing you to "stage" candid shots.
